Harriet Beecher Stowe Center

When you visit the Stowe Center, don’t expect a traditional historic house museum! Expect a conversational, interactive tour where you can participate along with your guide. You’ll see the beautifully preserved interiors of the National Historic Landmark — renovated in 2017 — alongside modern gallery spaces.
You’ll view rooms that reflect Stowe’s design choices and decorative arts as well as her own oil paintings. And you’ll explore exhibits that showcase the complicated and controversial legacy of her book, “Uncle Tom” whose name became a racial slur. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s life and work is an example of how one person can make a difference. You’ll leave feeling inspired that you can create positive change.

Connecticuts Old State House

Located in the heart of Hartford, Connecticut, this building served as a home to all three branches of Connecticut state government from 1796 to 1878. Some of our state’s most important stories of freedom, democracy, and civic action – from the Amistad and Prudence Crandall trials to the Constitutional Convention of 1818 – connect to this National Historic Landmark.
Today, Connecticut’s Old State House serves as a history museum, gathering spot and place of civic exploration for thousands of local, national and international visitors each year.

Connecticut State Capitol

Guided tours are available by reservation on weekdays at 9:15, 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, and 1:15. Self-guided tours are available on weekdays only from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Learn the history of the Capitol, a National Historic Landmark.
View items important to Connecticut history, including statues of Connecticut State Hero Nathan Hale, Prudence Crandall, Civil War Governor William Buckingham, and the “Genius of Connecticut.” Visit the Hall of Flags, where flags carried into battle by Connecticut soldiers are displayed. Observe the proceedings of the General Assembly from the public galleries when the House and Senate are in session.

Butler-McCook House and Garden

The Butler-McCook House & Garden is the only 18th-century home remaining on Hartford’s Main Street. It is a time capsule of Hartford’s past and the history of one family. Visitors are taken on a guided tour of the house that primarily focuses on the McCook family during the late 19th century and their artistic and intellectual interests. Guests will learn about a family who loved music, art, and travel through explorations of the museum’s collections which include paintings, Japanese samurai armor, furniture, and toys.

Bushnell Park Conservancy volunteer Arch Guides offer free tours of the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch, May-October, weather permitting.  No reservations needed unless you have a group of 6 or more. Tours last approximately 30 minutes.
